Why write this blog?
Enlightenment, liberation, awakening are some of the many concepts used to describe the state one aspires to on a religious or spiritual path. But what is this state and why strive to attain it? If we remove all of the supernatural and occult teachings that religions and spiritual paths get caught up in we can look at what enlightenment really is at its core. True seekers on any religious or spiritual path are only after one thing and do not concern themselves with all of the supernatural or occult things that the path may or may not promise them. All true seekers are after the truth; and that is what enlightenment is, attaining enlightenment is about the realisation of truth; the truth about the nature of self, the nature of other and the underlying foundations of the universe.
Religious or spiritual paths can often put off a lot of true seekers as adherents of certain faiths often get embroiled in my path is the only true path and yours is wrong. Instead of compassion, adherents learn cruelty; instead of love they learn hate. Adherents attach to their ideology and allow no natural evolution of these ideas. A result of this is, persecution, murder and war in the name of these ideologies.
The advances of science in the modern age has also garnered a new faith, attachment to the idea that if something can not be seen or explained through scientific testing then it is not true. Adherents to this way of thought often fall into the same trap as adherents of faiths and religions. This is equally as dangerous as it limits us to the accepted and available scientific methodologies of that time.
Supernatural stories that pop up in religious books can be an issue to a lot of people, as some of the stories and legends they are presented with can go against the scientific worldview that is prevalent in our current western society. Stories of men and women who have had powers of the gods because they have been so advanced on their own progression. These legends should be not be disregarded as these stories and legends can enflame the imagination and help some less advanced seekers strive towards spiritual development. But as true seekers become more advanced they view these aspirations as diversions from their real goal, which is the realisation of truth.
I believe that in this day and age there are a growing number of people that need a different approach to spiritual development (for the lack of a better term), and that is what I am attempting to offer in this blog. I want to discuss ideas and concepts that I have come to understand on my own journey and would also like to see how these ideas change and evolve over time as all things inevitably do.
